3 Tips to Help You Choose the Right Video Production Company

You’re doing everything possible to pick a production company that is reasonably priced, with a good track record, and a great portfolio

At the end of the day…

You need a creative that works for YOU. And here is a guide to tell you if you’ve found the right company to tell your story.

Read on to learn the three things you should look for when hiring for a video creative.

TIP 1: BE AWARE OF HOW MANY QUESTIONS THEY’RE ASKING YOU.

If they don’t get you to talk more than they do during your inquiry meeting then they SUCK!

There’s nothing that will waste your time more than having someone just talk about themselves and what equipment they have. Equipment can be rented but the right questions are invaluable.

The goal should be to figure out why you need the video(s) in the first place.

If you want to move a product, then what does your ideal client look like?

How many people do you need in your place of business to count this creative as a success?

Where will this creative be shown? Will there be another creative to pair the video campaign with?

These are the types of questions that need to be asked during the first meeting or you will hire on a team that just wants to make something pretty instead of helping you with your problem.

BEWARE OF THE TEAM THAT JUST ASKS FOR THE BUDGET.

TIP 2: OBSERVE THEIR BEHAVIOR.

Are they bulldozing over any of the information you are providing them? Are they constantly pitching you the latest and greatest camera to shoot your commercial?

These are telltale signs that you are talking to a production company that is ruled by Instagram and the Vimeo staff pick. While the top videos on these platforms are visually appealing, the style that’s in those videos may not always be appropriate for what your goals are.

Take note of how the conversation is making you feel. If the potential vendor isn’t asking you how their responses are landing in your mind then you don’t need to continue the inquiry. You’ve been told everything you need to in the first 15 minutes of the call.

Also, if they cut their costs drastically it is a sign of desperation (we’ve all been there) the decisions surrounding your potential clients can’t be made in desperation. You need a team that is healthy and have clear minds guiding them so everyone comes away from the project with a win.

TIP 3: DON’T BE AFRAID OF SAYING THE QUIET PART OUT LOUD.

This is probably the hardest thing to do in the moment. People generally avoid conflict but let’s think about this in a different way. What if saying what’s on your mind during a negative part in a negotiation will help the negotiation arrive at its natural end.

If you feel that a production company doesn’t have enough references, case studies, enough employees, just say it. Clearing the air will let them know where you are in the process and you will have your concerns addressed.

Of course, this must be done in the right tone and not antagonistically but there isn’t anything inherently aggressive with bringing up problems that you see.

Making these creatives are hard and require a lot of time and money, but they can be done. They fulfill a certain role in marketing where the viewer can feel like they are the ones driving the vehicles.
